BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jan. 27, 2012 - Bert S. Nettles, an attorney with Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker, LLC, has been recognized by the American Law Institute (ALI) as a Life Member, a special-status membership for members who have achieved 25 years' standing. Nettles will be honored at ALI's 89th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on May 22 in the State Room of The Mayflower Hotel.
ALI was established in 1923 to promote the clarification and simplification of American common law and its adaptation to changing social needs. The ALI drafts, approves and publishes Restatements of the Law, Principles of the Law, model codes, and other proposals for law reform. Membership in the ALI is limited to a small percentage of judges, lawyers, and legal scholars from a wide range of practice areas, from all areas of the United States and many foreign countries. ABOUT BERT S. NETTLES
Bert Nettles focuses his practice on the defense of complex civil litigation, with particular concentration in punitive damages claims (including bad faith and fraud actions), extra-contractual claims against insurers, and professional liability claims. He also maintains an active appellate practice and has appeared before the United States Supreme Court. During his long career, Nettles has been appointed as a Deputy or Assistant Attorney General by four different Alabama Attorneys General to represent the State of Alabama in various complex civil lawsuits.
In addition, he has served as counsel to the Alabama Insurance Underwriting Association for over 20 years. Nettles is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Insurance Law. A former president of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, Nettles has also served on the Advisory Committee for the United States Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the Alabama Supreme Court's Standing Committee on the Alabama Rules of Appellate Procedure, and was a member of the Alabama State Legislature from 1969 - 1974. He also served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Gulf Coast from 1983 - 1988 and as Assistant Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama from 2000 - 2003. He is a member of the American Law Institute and the International Association of Defense Counsel.
